What are Anxiety Disorders? A Guide to Understanding Anxiety and Panic Attacks

Anxiety disorder is a much more common thing than it used to be. What are the reasons for the increase? Some say it is environmental changes, the increase of stress in life, and even poor nutrition. Whatever the reason it can be a debilitating problem for so many.

Anxiety disorder is reported to affect women twice as much as men though some say this is due to women reporting their issues much more honestly than men do. Anxiety disorder can show itself in what is known as a "panic attack". Simply put, this is a "fight or flight" reaction to something that is rather benign. This reaction is in everyone. It is the body's innate reaction to emergency situations. But when it occurs in normal situations where there is no emergency or other reason for dire concern beyond, perhaps, a situation that makes the individual feel uncomfortable - such as an interview for a job.

The disorder can occur in children but most often begins in the teen or adult years. The increased production of adrenaline causes the body to react in a way that makes muscles tighten, and the heart rate and breathing increase rapidly. Symptoms of anxiety and panic include a sense of doom or overwhelming danger, shortness of breath, palpitations, dizziness, trembling, nausea, chills/sweating, loss of the track of time, and a feeling of smothering or claustrophobia. Ongoing attacks can create lasting symptoms such as generalized ill feeling, muscle aches, depression, inability to sleep well, lack of libido, and an inability to relax. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent these effects but anxiety often goes undiagnosed for quite awhile until it is considerably affecting a person's life and ability to function.

For years, anxiety and panic attacks were dismissed as psychosomatic - that it was all in the person's mind. Thankfully, studies have shown clearly that there is an actual physical basis. Many experts believe it to be a brain chemical issue so that the brain sends the wrong messages to the person. Certain foods, dietary habits and lifestyle play a big role in controlling, calming, and even eliminating the attacks. Natural therapies certainly give promise to anyone suffering from anxiety disorder, whether chronic or acute.
