How To Overcome Depression or Anxiety Without The Use of Medication

This is in no way to mean that a person can be cured of severe anxiety or depression just by popping a herbal supplement pill or some other holistic methods. It cannot be stated enough that serious depression is a disease. It can be fatal. One should never treat themselves for severe depression any more than trying to remove their gallbladder.

That said, however, not everyone who feels a little down should not have to get anti-depressants or tranquilizers from the doctor. You can stave off both anxiety and depression on their own. Here are some tips. These can also be combined effectively with medication for those with more severe depression and anxiety.

Exercise

This is a common method advised by doctors for patients with depression or anxiety. Again, you can deploy this in conjunction with medication, if the latter is required. Exercise helps strengthen muscles and raises one's serotonin levels to provide a strong energy boost. It can be challenging to bring yourself to exercise, especially when you're feeling depressed. But if you can get into the habit, it'll do wonders. Yes, even if you're also on medication.

Routine

Base your daily life on a routine of some sort. As anxiety stemms from the fear of the uncertainty and that depression and loss of control has its roots in low self esteem, a fixed routine anchors the individual to a support in an seemingly unsafe waters. Simple habits such as watching a tv show every night gives the patient some level of security. You know that regardless of how bad things are, you can still fall back on your routine.

Meditation & Yoga

As you may already be aware, yoga is an ancient eastern art where various body poses and contortions and sometimes meditation are used to grant the body inner peace. Although it's not necessary to contort your body before you can enjoy the benefits of Yoga. Nor do you need to chant to meditate. These 2 ancient arts focus on cleansing the body and the spirit through self discipline. And you can easily learn this by picking up a DVD or renting a video. Sometimes, reading a book helps too. Nothing beats attending a yoga class though as you can learn directly from instructors in a local environment. Some yoga courses incorporate meditation in its syallabus. But in case it doesn't, all you need is just 5 minutes of peace and quiet to expel such negative energies.
