Anxiety and depression seem to be the complete opposite of one another. Anxiety symptoms include heart palpitations, nausea, chest pain, shortness of breath, extreme nervousness with an increase in heart rate and blood pressure. Depression creates feelings of severe sadness, helplessness, a loss of interest and lack of pleasure. Generally you feel down and lifeless. So how can the two combine to be anxiety depression?

Can someone be anxious and depressed at the same time? If so, is the anxiety created by the depression? Or is the depression a result of the anxiety?

The answer will be different for different people and some people will have on or the other and not both. But yes, anxiety depression or depressive anxiety does exist. Anxiety and depression alone are challenging illnesses to treat so combined they present an even greater challenge. But that does not mean that they cannot be treated successfully.

The Connections of Anxiety and Depression

Though depression and anxiety are clearly two separate issues, they do share some commonalities. Depression can lead one to feeling doom, impending collapse of ones life, hopelessness, and loss of control of ones emotions. Energy levels are usually extremely low. People suffering from depression find it a struggle to face the tasks of their day and deal with work and social situations and people.

A person with anxiety suffers from unreasonable fear of everyday situations and circumstances. Reactions to situations are often severe panic and the person lives in constant worry of social interactions. If not treated, it can have a tremendous affect on the individual and cause them to completely avoid interaction with people and the world outside their home.

The Vicious Circle

Anxiety has the ability to wear a person down. The difficulties of dealing with every day life and trying to avoid situations causes a withdrawl from life and activities that one might normally enjoy. This in turn leads to a depressive state. The depression can me episodic or it can be chronic. But once out of the depressive cycle, the sufferer usually enters back into the anxiety side of the circle until eventually reaching the depressive state again.

Treatment Options

Anxiety and depression are often treated the same. Antidepressant medication is often used for anxiety just as it is for depression. So both illnesses carry the risk of side effects from the drug used to treat them. An often overlooked approach to treatment is that of natural remedies and lifestyle changes. These can make a tremendous difference in the person's state of mind and sometimes simple dietary deficiencies or , stress control methods and natural remedies can help bring one's anxiety and depression completely under control.
